Taking the Livery

The word “livery” originates from the specific clothing or attire associated with a particular trade. When an applicant becomes a liveryman, he/she becomes a full member of the Company during what is referred to as a “clothing” ceremony, where a gown is placed on the applicant. Liverymen have the right to vote in the elections of the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs.

Liverymen are expected to attend and participate in Company events, and to contribute to the Company’s charitable endeavours. In addition to fellowship, and to have the opportunity to support the profession of Scrivener Notary, by becoming a liveryman, an individual is able to benefit from and contribute to the ethos and heritage of the City of London.
