United Guilds Service - Friday 20 March 2026

by Linzi James 31 Mar 2026

The Master, Wardens, Clerk and over twenty Scriveners attended the 82nd United Guilds Service at St Paul’s Cathedral. The service, which takes place annually, gathers together representatives of all 114 Livery Companies, the Guilds with the Civic City and the Church. It was initially established in 1943 as a response to the devastation of London during the Blitz (more information shown on the back of the order of Service).

This year the service was led by The Dean, the Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, The Reverend George Bush, lately Rector of St Mary-le-Bow, gave the sermon and the final blessing was pronounced by the Bishop of Fulham. The Lady Mayor and the Sheriffs were present, accompanied by their consorts and the Aldermen processed with their Ward Beadles.

The Master, Wardens and Clerk mustered at Apothecaries’ Hall and processed with many other Livery Company Officers to St Paul’s. Following the service the Clerk was approached by a Spanish tourist curious about what was happening. The Clerk took advantage of having a Scrivener Notary Master, fluent in multiple languages, and asked him to explain in Spanish to the astonished visitor that this was not just a normal Friday in the City of London!

Thereafter, a lunch of Livery Fellowship was hosted by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.
