Liveryman, Dr Win Eyles, produces calligraphy for Old Bailey - Friday 16 January 2026

by Linzi James 28 Jan 2026

At the suggestion of the Recorder, His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft KC (the most senior judge at the Old Bailey), the Honorary Secondary of London, Fiona Adler, had approached the Company to enquire whether we could arrange to replace the calligraphy scrolls which contain the formal declarations made during the official opening of the court. The ones in use had seen better days and mention of the King had been inserted in ball point on the scrolls, where the original calligraphy referred to Her Late Majesty, Elizabeth II.

We were delighted to be involved in this part of the history and tradition of the City and we asked Dr Win Eyles, a long-standing member of the Company, to undertake the work for us. As you can see from the photographs, Win produced the most beautiful (and legible) scrolls for the declarations which are used during the ceremonies.

To thank Win and the Company for their involvement, The Master Scrivener, Andrew Claudet, and Win, along with their spouses were invited to sit in the dock of Court Number One for the opening when the Lady Mayor was sitting on the bench of judges.
