Signing of the Armed Forces Covenant - Thursday 18 September 2025

by Linzi James 24 Sep 2025

On Thursday 18 September the Master Scrivener, Andrew Claudet, signed the Armed Forces Covenant alongside Commander Matthew Court, Commanding Officer of our naval affiliates who serve onboard HMS Portland. We really appreciate that the Commander, accompanied by Lt Commander Kieran Tamayo, made the journey to London from Plymouth (where the ship was based until recently), in order to sign the Covenant.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a commitment from the nation that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives as a result of their military service.

It is important that organisations publicly pledge their support for the Armed Forces Community. In so doing we are making a statement to the Armed Forces that they are valued by society and we are also encouraging other organisations to do the same, and to offer practical support where possible.

Reservists, Service leavers, Cadet Adult instructors and Cadets can bring unique skills to their civilian employment which are beneficial in a modern working environment. Such skills include not only nationally recognised business and technical qualifications but also “softer” transferable skills such as leadership, discipline, problem-solving and teamwork.

Research has shown that having young people involved in the many Cadet forces builds key life skills like confidence, resilience, and teamwork, boosts employability, and can improve mental and physical well-being, especially for disadvantaged young people.

The Scriveners’ Company is extremely proud of its long-standing military affiliations with the type 23 Frigate, HMS Portland and our RAF affiliation with LXX squadron and 329 Finsbury Squadron Air Training Corps.

The Lady Mayoress, Florence King, an army Reservist, was present to witness the signing, along with two cadets from the Air Training Corps. One of the Lady Mayoress’ objectives during the year has been to encourage Livery Companies and other organisations she has been in contact with to make a commitment to the Armed Forces and to sign the Armed Forces Covenant. She has certainly achieved that goal.

We were also joined by Liz Church RD VR, the Secretary of City Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, who supported us through from the initial discussions about what was involved to ensuring it all happened on the evening.
