Visit to HMS Portland, January 2025

by Linzi James 20 Jan 2025

Following an invitation from the Commanding Officer of HMS Portland, Commander Matthew  Court RN, on Monday 13 January, a group of Scriveners and guests had the opportunity to go aboard the ship in His Majesty’s Naval Dockyard Devonport, Plymouth, and to be given a tour of the ship, as part of a Day at Sea for the ship’s affiliates. The ship set sail during the morning, and we spent a few hours at sea with the crew, including a very enjoyable lunch. It afforded a rare opportunity to gain an idea of what life is like for the sailors, and to be given some indication as to the ship’s capabilities. We were able to visit the Bridge, the Operations Room, the Control Centre, and the flight deck.  A highlight of the day was a spectacular operational display by a Merlin helicopter (based in Culrose) which accompanies the ship when on deployment, which we were able to observe from the flight deck, during which a member of the crew was lowered from the helicopter to almost sea level while continuing to fly at some speed alongside the ship. Within sight of Eddystone Lighthouse the ship then rehearsed high speed manoeuvres.

HMS Portland is a Type 23 frigate. This type of vessel is predominantly an anti-submarine defensive ship and has been used in a variety of roles, including warfighting and security operations.

Our sincere thanks are due to Commander Court and Lieutenant Commander Kieran Tamayo RN for arranging the visit for us and for the time which they and their colleagues spent with us on the day. We are also extremely grateful to Andrew Cross for his time and effort in arranging and coordinating what proved to be a very memorable day.
